This brilliant insight isn’t really mine. I got it from Jane Mcgonigal, author of Reality is Broken.
Jane studies video games, what compels billions of us to spend so much time playing them and how we might harness that energy to solve bigger problems than defeating imaginary foes made of pixels.
Why DO so many people spend so many hours playing video games instead of investing their time and energy in ‘reality’?
The short answer is that it’s satisfying in ways that reality, or at least their reality is not.
A great game presents an interesting challenge, there are rules, there is a clear cut score and it’s voluntary.
Contrast this with most school and work.
Interesting challenge? Often, no.
Rules? When I get a room of CEO’s and ask them what the game is about, I never get agreement or clarity.
Scoring? Revenue, profit, market share? These are certainly measured, but they are rarely connected to the actions of most individuals
And finally, voluntary? School is mandated by law, and most people work because they hafta.
So there you go. Games score 100% on the human intrinsic satisfaction scale and reality (school and work) score maybe 25-50% at best for most people.
Which leads to an interesting new approach.
