This post is an excerpt from my book “18” Preparing our younger selves for an unpredictable future.
My best and most memorable teachers (sadly they are too few) were not really teachers so much as leaders. And that’s what we really need, learning leaders.
Schools like to say that they recruit the best teachers in each subject. To me the best math teacher is the best presenter, not necessarily the most accomplished mathematician.
When it comes time to explain math to my daughters, I want them to hear from someone who is gifted at presentation. But we can’t all have THAT teacher ‘in-house’ for math or for any other subject for that matter.
What I really want my daughters to spend their time with is a learning leader, a learning coach; someone to guide and support their learning process and nurture their interests and talents.
My wife and I see learning leadership as our most important job.
Leadership is about creating space for accomplishment. The best coaches of all time have not necessarily been the subject experts, but they were experts when it came to holding their team to high standards and giving them room to make mistakes and find their highest contribution.
Education degrees and state teaching certificates do not tell me if someone is a gifted learning leader, we as parents need to hold ourselves to a higher standard - we need to strengthen our commitment and abilities as learning leaders.
Commentary – Leadership is the product and service that is most in demand in the new economy – Leadership is THE growth industry.
